Hippuris vulgaris L.
These aquatic plants grow from an immersed horizontal rhizome. The long, single stems are jointed, bright green, rising 8" to 24" tall above the water's surface. The stems are ringed with whorls of short, narrow, pointed leaves. Minute white flowers appear in the axils of the leaves; the unopened buds are red.
Mare's tail is a beautiful plant of quiet water. It grows in large stands from the muddy bottoms of sloughs, river bends and shallow ponds.
Northern circumpolar and widespread across Alaska.
