Bushy, succulent and cartilaginous

Plants bright to dark red in colour, 14 - 15 cm in height, erect, cartilaginous, attached by small discs, dichotomously branched; axes cylindrical, un-constricted, about 2 mm thick, uniform in thickness, axial strand not visible with the naked eye (Fig. a); thallus composed of filamentous central medulla and outer cortex, cortical portion consisting of pyriform and ellipsoidal utricles, intermixed with rows of pigmented cells (Fig. b).
