Plants rose red in colour, 5 - 10 cm tall, attached by a discoid or crustose holdfast; flattened, foliose, strap-like and fleshy with pinnately or palmately dissected or regularly lobed thalli (Figs. a, b); ultimate laterals terete and tapering to tips; thallus is multiaxial with cortical layer and filamentous medulla; cystocarps are sunk in the cortex surrounded by filamentous pericarp, carpospores ellipsoidal (Fig. c). Popularly used in salad preparations in Japan. Japanese have made some attempts to develop field cultivation methods for large scale propagation like other seaweeds
