The metabolic rate of procyanidins after consumption in humans is not yet fully understood.35 After consumption of 2 g of high-procyanidin grape seed extract by volunteers, the plasma concentrations of procyanidin B1 reached only 10 nmol/L;36 after consumption of 0.375 g cocoa/kg body weight, the plasma concentrations of procyanidin B2 reached only 41 nmol/L.37 When administered in a purified form to rats, procyanidin dimer B3 was not found in the plasma.38 However, there is much evidence regarding the relatively fast absorption and excretion of flavanols.35 Bio-availability differs markedly among catechins. Flavanol accumulation in plasma is detected after 2 h of the ingestion with concentrations ranging from 0.1 pM to 6 pM after cocoa beverage or tea intake.35 For these reasons, it is difficult to extract conclusions on the human bioavailability of pomegranate husk procyanidins as these polyphenols have never been assayed for bioavailaibility in humans in any food source. It is also noteworthy that among the polyphenols present in pomegranates, procyanidins (condensed tannins) constitute far lower quantities than ellagitannins (hydrolysable tannins).
