Summary of Plant Reactions to Temperature

• Plants exploit many possible ways to avoid heat stress (leaf position, size, surface area, transpiration, insulation).

• Plants have limited ways of avoiding cold stress (position of leaf, insulation, heat storage and heat conductance).

• Structural modifications and regulation of stomata are usually sufficient to keep the temperature of the plant within the physiologically acceptable range and away from damaging temperatures by latent heat loss.
