Into a quart bottle put in 1 oz lavender oil, one drop of musk and one and a half pints of spirit of wine; shake; allow to settle; shaken again after a few days and poured into perfume bottles. It could also be made with rose-water and orange flower water. Brandy could be used with the lavender oil and it was to be diluted with water (Grieve, 1937).
Lavender vinegar was a refreshing toilet water made by mixing 6 parts rosewater, 1 part of lavender spirits and 2 parts of Orleans vinegar (Grieve, 1937). Fresh flowers could also be directly steeped in the vinegar. Alternative recipes included: dried rose leaves, lavender flowers and jasmine flowers mixed in vinegar, then rosewater would be added and allowed to rest for 10 days.
