clones varied significantly. Total dry matter varied from 2579 g to 4853 g. The per cent distribution of dry matter and harvest index is given in Table 2.5. The dry matter yield of capsules ranged from 13.2 g (Sel.3) to 234.3 g in Sel.9. The percentage distribution of dry matter towards capsules was highest in Sel.9 (9.08), in contrast the local check gave a value of 0.68 per cent. Harvest index differed significantly among the entries tested, the highest was in Sel.9 (0.091), followed by Sel.4 (0.062), again the lowest value was in the local check (0.06). Partitioning of photosynthates to various plant parts is controlled by the genetic make up of the genotype. Partitioning efficiency reflected in the per cent dry matter distribution towards capsules in clones such as Sel.9, Sel.7 etc. and their higher harvest index have clearly indicated their superior yielding ability, and their usefulness in crop improvement programmes.
