Fruit production represents a balance in the allocation of resources, such as carbohydrates, water, and growth regulators, between vegetative growth (shoots, leaves, buds, roots) and reproductive fruiting. Within any scion-rootstock combination, there is a genetically regulated equilibrium between all the components of vegetative and reproductive growth. Training and pruning alter this balance based on certain biological principles of growth and fruiting. Understanding these basic principles allows the orchardist to gain maximum benefit from given training or pruning practices.
