3.3.2. Leafy explants and photosynthesis

In photoautotrophic micropropagation, leafy explants are commonly used. Therefore, photosynthetic ability of explants is critical, especially regarding the initial growth of plantlets. As shown in Figure 2, sugar concentration of the medium affects the net photosynthetic rate of leafy single node cuttings of potato as soon as they are transferred to the medium (Nakayama et al., 1991). In forcedly ventilated vessels, net photosynthetic rates of the explants are promoted, compared with those in naturally ventilated vessels (Nakayama et al., 1991).
