Extract 0.5 g fresh samples of a test plant by immersion in dichloromethane for 7 days at 5Ā°C in darkness. Add a small aliquot of anhydrous MgSO4 and mix. Filter the preparation through Whatman # 1 paper. Evaporate the solvent to dryness under nitrogen and resuspend the sample in HPLC-grade chloroform. Prepare samples for HPLC analysis by refiltering the extract through cellulose acetate HPLC syringe filters. Evaporate the chloroform solvent to dryness and resuspend the extract in 250 ml of HPLC-grade methanol (Flores et al., 1988).
