Gryllotalpa spp. are easily recognised by their powerful forelegs used for digging. Mole crickets can cause significant damage to newly set tea tree transplants by severing their roots. Crickets usually forage in horizontal tunnels in the top 5 cm of soil but may feed on the soil surface during periods of high humidity following rain or irrigation. Damage relates to soil type and is worst in sandy loams near rivers or creeks.
The various factors that affect metal assimilation are reflected in the wide variety of Cd AEs that have been reported in organisms of different food chains fed biologically contaminated food. For instance AEs ranging from 1 have been reported in rats fed snail viscera (Hispard et al. 2008) , to 4.7 in the lizard Podarcis carbonelli fed crickets (Mann et al. 2006), to 52 in the iso-pod P. dilatatus fed lettuce (Calh a et al. 2006), and up to 76.2-94.2 for whelk Thais clavigera fed five different species of prey (Cheung and Wang 2005). High body-burdens among herbivo-rous detritivorous invertebrates occur because of high dietary-Cd assimilation efficiencies (up to 100 , Calh a et al. 2006 Laskowski and Hopkin 1996 Zidar et al. 2003) and low rates of elimination (e.g. Witzel 2000).
The bottom of the hollow pitcher, zone 3, is lined with glands which secrete digestive enzymes and zone 4 with absorptive glands. These enzymes are effective in the chemical breakdown of prey, except for the more resistant portions of the insect's body, such as chitin. Numerous organisms exist and thrive in the liquid that accumulates in the base of the pitchers. Among these denizens are yeast cells and bacteria which assist in the digestion of the prey, although the full extent of their role has not been ascertained. In any case, digestion does occur and protein is broken down into amino acids, which are absorbed by the plant along with minerals. The efficiency of Sarracenia pitchers is attested to by the numerous insects and their remains that accumulate in the base of the pitchers. Some of the more common victims are ants, beetles, crickets, wasps, spiders, flies of various kinds, and occasionally small toads.
Of all the insects that leave their young to grow within the pitchers, a solitary wasp makes the most elaborate preparations. Wherever pitchers grow within the range of this southern insect, it uses them as protective shelters for its eggs. The Sarracenia wasp stuffs the lower part of a pitcher tube with a plug of grass or moss. It then packs the pitcher with layers of freshly killed grasshoppers or crickets, separated by more loose wads of grass. The wasp lays eggs among the dead insects and then tops everything off with another wad of plucked grass or moss. The young develop within the sealed leaf, the dead insects providing a generous supply of food.
