Pharmacology And Therapeutic Applications Constipation

Aloe Vera Mechanism Action

Aloe latex possesses laxative properties and has been used traditionally to treat constipation (Benigni etal., 1962). The old practice of using aloe as a laxative drug is based on its content of anthraquinones like barbaloin, which is metabolised to the laxative aloe-emodin, isobarbaloin and chrysophanic acid (Leung, 1980 Blumenthal, 1998). The term 'aloe' (or 'aloin') refers to a crystalline, concentrated form of the dried aloe latex. In addition, aloe latex contains large amounts of a resinous material. Following oral administration the stomach is quickly reached and the time required for passage into the intestine is determined by stomach content and gastric emptying rate. Glycosides are probably chemically stable in the stomach (pH 1 3) and the sugar moiety prevents their absorption into the upper part of the gastrointestinal tract and subsequent detoxification in the liver, which protects them from breakdown in the intestine before they reach their site of action in the colon and...

Coping Mechanisms For Stress And Disease

Other stress-related diseases are also correlated with personality. A study was performed with individuals with chronic constipation with and without IBS. This study demonstrated a significant correlation with chronic constipation in all groups with increased hostility.68 Additionally, studies with inflammatory bowel disease show a decrease in relapse and surgical interventions in those individuals with more mature psychological defense mechanisms.69

Processing and utilization

Lactoserum waste water by using dynamic membranes, 85-93 of the protein can be recovered. The lactoserum protein is a natural surface active agent and can be used for cosmetics. Lactoserum protein is easily digested and assimilated and has a high metabolic rate and biological value. Lactoserum waste water can be used for the extraction of oligosaccharides, which can promote intestinal peristaltics and ease constipation. It also promotes the growth of Bifidobacterium and improves the structure of the intestinal bacterial flora.

Anthracene glycosides

Anthracene glycosides are also known as anthracenosides. They are purgative in nature. On hydrolysis, they produce glycones like dianthrone, anthraquinone or anthrone. The sugars are arabinose, rhamnose or glucose. Anthraquinones (Fig. 5.155) are the active constituents and are responsible for the biological activity of the anthracene glycoside containing drugs. In addition to use in treating constipation, they are used for the treatment of skin disease like psoriasis and ringworm (Fig. 5.156).

When livestock, especially cattle, eat it in large quantities, it causes severe poisoning due to a toxicant that it contains. The ailment is called trembles in cattle, and can be transmitted to humans by eating dairy products or meat from the poisoned cattle. The human form is called milk sickness, an acute disease characterized by weakness, vomiting and constipation.

Dandelion and traditional medicine

The genus name Taraxacum is derived from the Greek word 'taraxos', meaning 'disorder' and 'akos' meaning 'remedy'. As a medicinal plant, T.officinale has been considered to be an aperient or mild laxative, diuretic, stimulant, stomachic, tonic, and detoxicant. Tea prepared from T.officinale has been used against fever, insomnia, jaundice, rheumatism, eczema and other skin diseases, and constipation. T.officinale and other Taraxacum species have also been used against warts, cancers, and tumors.

Natural Remedies For Promoting Skin Health

The skin is a mirror of an individual's state of health. A skin condition often reflects a deeper state of imbalance. (See Table 31-1 on page 354.) Because the skin is an organ of elimination, if other organs of elimination (liver, kidneys, or bowels) are compromised, a skin outbreak may reflect the body's attempt to discharge wastes through an alternate route. Intestinal disturbances, such as constipation, may play a role in skin problems by increasing the amount of toxins circulating in the body. To ameliorate skin conditions, it is necessary to improve the health of these organs. For example, supporting liver health may help to improve acne conditions associated with hormonal imbalances.

Bioactivity of Aloe arborescens preparations

Arborescens refers to the tree-like habit and A. arborescens var. natalensis (Kidachi aloe in Japanese, which is also called 'doc-buster'), is naturalized on the west coast (West Sonogi penisula in Nagasaki) and the south coast (Izu penisula and Shikoku island) of Japan. A. arborescens hybridises readily with other species of Aloe with which it co-occurs. Morphologically, it is hard to discriminate A. arborescens from A. arborescens var. natalensis, and we are studying a phylogenetic analysis of Aloe species in an internal transcribed spacer 1 in A. arborescens and A. arborescens var. natalensis. The results up indicate a high sequence similarity matrix between them (unpublished data). The preparations from Kidachi aloe gel are not as popular as those of A. vera gel on the market in the U.S.A., because the gel part of Kidachi aloe leaf (leaf length, width and thickness are 200 X 50 X 20 mm on average) is comparatively smaller than the rind part and it is difficult to separate only the...

Applied Aspects Of Bee Pollen

Experiments reveal that bee pollen is an amazing biological stimulant with healing properties. In his book Sexual Nutrition, Morton Walker described the effects of bee pollen on both animals and humans with a variety of medical disorders. Treatment with bee pollen improved energy levels, relieved constipation and diarrhoea and acted as a tranquilizer for hyperactive patients. Other effects were increased blood haemoglobin and stress reduction at the cellular level.

In Ayurveda, the drug is classified as an expectorant. It isan integral part of Ayurvedic laxative formulation, Triphala. T. belerica is used in the treatment of the common cold, pharyngitis and constipation. Unripe fruit is a mild laxative and ripe fruit is an astringent. T. belerica seeds are used as an aphrodisiac. Oil expressed from the seed pulp is used in leucoderma and alopecia. Modern investigations have proved the laxative activity of the oil.

Theoretically, inadequate magnesium levels may contribute to asthma exacerbations.27 It is of interest to note that, while overall calcium intake in the United States has increased in the past 20 years, magnesium intake has remained unchanged, while the asthma epidemic continues to grow. Magnesium is an important contributor to prophylaxis of asthma symptoms and intravenous magnesium is an accepted form of emergency treatment for acute asthma attacks. Magnesium acts physiologically as a calcium antagonist, allowing muscle relaxation to occur.28 Patients with chronic asthma were shown to be hypomagnesemic, and this was associated with airway hyper-reactivity, wheezing, and general impairment of lung function in one study. In addition, this investigation revealed that patients who have chronic asthma and have lower stores of magnesium are hospitalized more often than other patients with asthma who have normal levels of magnesium. Hypomagnesemia was also associated with more severe...

Surface Infections

At present, two Microbacteriaceae have been described to cause infection in C. elegans. These are L. chromiireducens (Muir and Tan 2008) and M. nematophilum (Hodgkin et al. 2000) which cause localized infections in the uterus and the rectal region, respectively. However, whereas L. chromiireducens cause lethality in C. elegans, M. nematophilum establishes a non-lethal interaction but the worms show severe constipation and a decrease in the overall fecundity (Hodgkin et al. 2000).

Classically, patients with endometriosis present with chronic or cyclic pelvic pain and infertility. Pain often begins 1 to 2 days prior to onset of menstruation and may last several days or throughout the menstrual period. Additional symptoms may include dyspareunia, abnormal uterine bleeding, cyclic pain with defecation or urination, blood in urine or stool, constipation, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and fainting. However, one-third of women diagnosed with endometriosis are asymptomatic. The severity of pelvic pain does not correlate with the extent of the disease though it may correlate with the proximity of adhesions to nerve endings (see the box below entitled Symptoms of Endometriosis'').17

L In Nigeria the plant is used as a pot-herb and in Ghana it is used to combat constipation (Dalziel, 1937). In India and in Senegal (Wolof) the root is considered emetic and purgative and is applied externally as an antiseptic to ulcers and wounds (Chopra i a ., 1956 Kerharo, 1968). The leaves can also be used but are less active.

Supplementation with magnesium has a reputation for producing a calming effect on patients with anxiety symptoms and or elevated stress levels. In one study, nervousness and insomnia levels decreased in patients who were given 200 mg of magnesium combined with 400 mg of calcium.8 Another researcher found an association between magnesium deficiency and anxiety symptoms.9 In a study investigating the use of magnesium to alleviate pain in postsurgical patients, the patients were infused with magnesium both during and following surgery and were evaluated for anxiety levels. Patients who received the magnesium infusion required significantly less pain medication compared to the subjects in the control group who did not receive magnesium. In addition, the magnesium-treated group reported less anxiety symptoms.10 Magnesium deficiency is common in the typical American diet. One large survey determined that adequate magnesium was lacking in nearly 72 of diets, and that 50 consume less than 75...

The bitter compounds in the leaves and root help stimulate digestion and are mild laxatives. These bitter principles also increase bile production in the gallbladder and bile flow from the liver. Oral administration of extracts from the roots of T. officinale has been shown to act as a cholagogue, increasing the flow of bile. In German studies, dandelion leaf extracts increased bile secretion by 40 in rats. In French studies, giving dogs a decoction of fresh dandelion root doubled their bile output. In two Chinese studies of animals with gastric ulcers, gastric metaplasia and hyperplasia, dandelion-containing herbal combinations led to significant histologic improvement.

Carum carvi is recommended as a remedy curing digestive tract disorders like flatulence, eructation, stomach aches, constipation, lack of appetite, nausea. It is a mild drug, considered safe even for infants and the elderly. In small children caraway is used to treat flatulence and stomach aches, in the elderly for bile flow disorders, intestinal atony, vegetative neurosis (Ozarowski and Jaroniewski 1987).

Aloe Preparations

Aloes require two or three years standing before they yield their latex. In Africa the latex is collected from the wild plants in the case of aloe plantations the drug is collected in April July. Aloe latex ( aloe) contains mainly anthraquinones, cathartic compounds useful in constipation. It is totally different from the aloe gel ( aloe vera), a colourless gelatin obtained from the central portion of aloe leaf. The mucilaginous parenchyma tissue is excised from fresh leaves and immediately utilised for pharmaceutical preparations or lyophilized and kept dry until use. During extraction of the gel it is practically impossible to prevent contamination by the latex as the leaves are cut. On the other hand in intact leaves, anthraquinones may diffuse into gel from the bundle sheath cells. To reduce such contamination the starting material must be from varieties of Aloe with a reduced anthraquinone content. Aloe gel is sensitive to heat and light and can quickly deteriorate when exposed...

For adults, one plate of halwa (60-70 g) is given daily at bedtime for 10-15 days. Rheumatism, constipation, phlegm, body weakness, indigestion, back problem, pimples, and skin lesions also used to cool inflamed body parts.

L In Nigeria the juice of the leaves of A. schweinfurthi Bak. is used in the treatment of guinea worm infestation and in Ghana it is used for the treatment of vitiligo (Dalziel, 1937, p. 476). In India extracts of A. barbadensis are considered a tonic in small doses and a purgative, emmenagogue and anthelmintic in larger doses. The dried juice is cathartic and is used to relieve constipation. The pulp is used to reduce or prevent menstruation (Chopra etal., 1956, p. 13).

Aloe, when introduced into Europe, was used for constipation and skin ailments and later, in the 1930s, was used to treat radiation burns (Tyler etal, 1981). From the ancient times to the seventeenth century the Socotrine aloe was the only official aloe. This vegetable remedy was imported into Europe by way of the Red Sea and Alexandria there was a direct trade in aloes between Socotra and some medieval towns like Venice, which by the fifteenth century became the greatest trading centre of Europe. At the end of the seventeenth century it was possible to find aloes from the Barbados in Europe, and later, towards the end of the eighteenth century, the Cape Aloe too. The drug was included as a laxative in the U.S. Pharmacopoeia in 1820, in the Italian Pharmacopoeia in 1892 and in the European Pharmacopoeia in 1969. Today Socotrine aloes are very rare, while Barbados and Cape aloes are the most common.
