History of Production

Statistics in The Netherlands show that caraway was cultivated as a field crop as early as the end of the 18th century, just before crop statistics were started (Kops 1840). Caraway was first cultivated as field crop in the area around the town of Enkhuizen on the coast of the then 'Zuyderzee' inland sea in the province of Noord Holland. The variety is referred to as the 'Noord-Hollandsche' landrace (Rassenlijst 1936) which, ultimately, must have been derived from naturally occurring caraway but of this there is no documentary evidence. In the early 1900s caraway cultivation was initiated in the Oldambt region with very heavy sea derived clay in the Northeast of the northern province of Groningen. In the 1920s and -30s, the heyday of caraway production in The Netherlands, when over 20,000 ha were grown, it was cultivated in all provinces (Zijlstra 1916).
