There are excellent drawings and photos useful for identification, and the writing is clear and interesting — models for some of today's scientist-authors!

Some taxonomic discrepancies, but good descriptions, range maps, and a fine set of line drawings of all species.

Mandossian, A. J. 1965. Plant associates of Sarracenia purpurea in acid and alkaline habitats. Michigan Botanist 4:107-14. This paper and the two that follow form an interesting and informative series detailing the author's studies in Michigan bogs.

Plummer, G. L., and Kethley, J. B. 1964. Foliar absorption of amino acids, peptides and other nutrients by the pitcher plant, Sarracenia flava. Botanical Gazette 125:245-60. First reported use of modern methods for following absorption and transfer using radioisotopes.

Wherry, E. T. 1929. Acidity relations of the Sarra-

cenias. Journal of the Washington Academy of Science 19:379-90. In this paper the author first describes the jonesii pitcher plants of the Carolina mountains as a species. Contains interesting information on soil pH studies with respect to Sarracenia.

nea 37:146-47. After years of controversy, this paper contains the author's decision to consider Sarracenia jonesii a subspecies of S. rubra. See also Bell (1949) and McDaniel (1971).

-. 1933. The geographic relations of Sarracenia purpurea. Bartonia (15): l- 8. In this paper, Wherry makes his first presentation of the concept of two purpurea subspecies. See Wherry (1972) for his updated thoughts.

Walcott, M. V. 1935. Illustrations of the North American pitcher plants. Washington, D.C.: Smithsonian Institution. A limited edition folio of water color prints of all the species, long out of print but available in many libraries; a collector's item. Actually, the prints are limited because of the material selected for illustration, but they are beautifully executed. This volume is more important for the descriptive notes by Edgar T. Wherry and for a fine summary section (with bibliography) on insect associates by Frank Morton Jones.
