Bryophytes in traditional systems of medicine

Pharmacological Properties

In Ayurveda and Sidha systems of medicine cardamom finds application as a component of several therapeutic formulations. Charakasamhita, the ancient Indian medical text, describes the use of cardamom as an antidote for food poisoning. This forms a constituent of Bhrahmi rasayana, which is used as a treatment for inflammations. Also used as a component of many balms, ointments and therapeutic oils used against cramps, rheumatic pain, inflammations etc. In Ayurvedic texts the properties of cardamom seeds are described as aromatic, acrid, sweet, cooling, stimulant, carminative, diuretic, cardiotonic and expectorant. Cardamom is used as an ingredient in preparations used for the treatment of asthma, bronchitis, hemorrhoids, renal and vesicle calculi, cardiac disorders, anorexia, dyspepsia, gastropathy, debility and vitiated conditions of vata. But no pharmacological investigations were carried out to validate the above properties. An aqueous extract of seeds is given to nursing mother to...

Authentification of lavender essential oil

Lavender oil and a variety of other essential oils were tested for effects on the lipid-peroxidation-antioxidase defence system and lipid metabolism in 150 patients with chronic bronchitis (Siurin, 1997). There was a lowering of plasma levels of dienic conjugates and ketones, activation of catalase in red blood cells which the author stated was characteristic of an antioxidant effect on exposure to essential oils of rosemary, basil, fir and eucalyptus. However, lavender had a normalizing effect on the level of total lipids and the ratio of cholesterol to its alpha fraction. L. latifolia is used in Paraquay for treating bronchitis, asthma, rheumatism and has also been applied topically for swellings. The aerial parts of L. latifolia (650g) were extracted with hot 70 per cent ethanol and then concentrated to give a 70 per cent extract (164 g). The extract was then partitioned between water and chloroform to give a chloroform-soluble and water-soluble fraction and a precipitate (Shimizu...

Glucotropaeolin

Glucotropaeolin is the characteristic, aromatic glucosinolate found in T. majus which has been indicated for the treatment of scurvy, bronchitis, cystitis, pyelitis and as a general tonic and stimulant (Bardeau 1978). In the pharmaceutical industry it has long been recognised for its antimicrobial action against urethral infections (Dannenberg et al. 1956, Bergmann et al. 1966). The active component is benzylisothiocyanate, which is released after enzymatic cleavage of glucotropaeolin by myrosinase. Benzylisothiocyanate derived from T. majus may also have the ability to induce the synthesis of protective enzymes, which reduces the effects of chemical carcinogens (Fahey et al. 1997).

Traditional use

Externally chamomile is applied in the form of hot compresses to badly healing wounds, such as for a hip bath with abscesses, furuncles, hemorrhoids, and female diseases as a rinse of the mouth with inflammations of the oral cavity and the cavity of the pharynx as chamomile steam inhalation for the treatment of acne vulgaris and for the inhalation with nasal catarrhs and bronchitis and as an additive to baby baths. In Roman countries it is quite common to use chamomile tea even in restaurants or bars and finally even in the form of a concentrated espresso. This is also a good way of fighting against an upset stomach due to a sumptuous meal, plenty of alcohol, or nicotine. In this case it is not easy to draw a line and find out where the limit to luxury is.

Annonaceae

L In Nigeria the fruits are used as a cough cure, a carminative and a stimulating additive to other remedies. A fluid extraction or a decoction of the fruit or bark is recommended in the treatment of bronchitis, dysentery and biliousness. An extract of the seeds is also used to eliminate roundworm. The fruit is used as a condiment (Dalziel, 1937).
