Mikesell (1979) summarizes the results of the previous studies of Metcalfe and Chalk (1950), Chalk and Chattaway (1937) and Pfeiffer (1926). Mikesell (1979) and Carlquist (2000) studied in detail the ontogenic development of the primary thickening meristem of Phytolacca americana.
The results of the present study agree with the studies from Mikesell (1979) and Carlquist (2000).
