Mitogenic activity

Aloctin A (Suzuki etal, 1979) isolated from whole leaves of A. arborescens and a 35 kDa mannose-binding lectin (Koike etal, 1995a) isolated from the leaf skin of A. arborescens have mitogenic activities toward lymphocytes. Although verectin (Yagi etal., 1997), which was isolated from the leaf gel of A. arborescens, is not a lectin, it has a proliferation-promoting activity that is closely associated with its mitogenic activity. In contrast to A. barbadensis that contains many cell-agglutinating lectins, A. arborescens appears to have many substances with mitogenic activities.
