[Pemba and Zanzibar are part of Tanzania but treated separately here because they are in the Indian Ocean, and one species on Pemba (A. pembana) belongs to the Lomatophyllum group, so far not known on the African mainland. Socotra is also listed separately, though it is part of Yemen.]

The long-cultivated Aloe vera (L.) Burm.f. has become naturalised in many tropical and sub-tropical countries, including some in the New World. The exact origin of A. vera is uncertain, but it seems likely that it is the Arabian Peninsula, home of the closely related, and possibly conspecific, A. officinalis Forssk.
