The following lectins were isolated from whole leaves of A. arborescens : an 18 kDa lectin (Aloctin A) containing neutral sugars by 18%; a 24 kDa lectin (Aloctin B) containing neutral sugars by more than 50% (Suzuki etal., 1979); a 40kDa lectin containing sugar by 34%; and, a 64kDa lectin (ATF 1011) containing sugars by 0.4—0.7% and amino-sugars by less than 0.3% (Yoshimoto etal, 1987). From the leaf skin of A. arborescens, a 35 kDa lectin was also isolated (Koike etal., 1995a).

Non-cell-agglutinating substances with mitogenic activities toward mouse lymphocytes were also isolated from a low-molecular mass fraction of hot water extracts of the leaf flesh of A. barbadensis (Yasuda etal, 1999); from a high-molecular mass fraction of hot water extracts of the leaf skin of A. arborescens; from a low-molecular mass fraction of hot water extracts and 0.1 M NaOH extracts of the residue of hot water extracts of the leaf flesh of A. africana; and, from a high-molecular mass fraction of hot water extracts and 0.1 M NaOH extracts of the residue of hot water extracts of the leaf skin of A. africana.
